SOS Nicaragua is a dedicated conservation organisation committed to protecting and preserving endangered sea turtles along Nicaragua’s Pacific coast. In the fragile Los Brasiles area, the foundation works around the clock to protect eggs from poaching and natural threats, so the hatchlings can safely reach the ocean.

Why

Sea turtle nests along Nicaragua’s coast are under severe pressure. Egg poachers, illegal sales, natural predators and rising sea levels threaten the survival of this remarkable species. Without active protection on the beach, only a fraction of the eggs make it to the hatchling stage. SOS Nicaragua was founded to involve local communities in conservation efforts and protect nests on the beach directly.

Mission & goals

SOS Nicaragua’s mission is to secure a safe future for the sea turtle population through active beach protection, community involvement, and education. Its main goals are:

  • Nest protection and management: Securing nests on the beaches of Los Brasiles and relocating the eggs to protected hatcheries (hatcheries).
  • Discouraging poaching: Encouraging and compensating egg collectors to hand over eggs to the protection project instead of selling them on the illegal market.
  • Education and engagement: Teaching local communities, schoolchildren, and international volunteers about the importance of ocean ecosystems.
  • Scientific research: Monitoring nesting success, temperature, and the number of turtles that safely return to the sea.
Actions
  • Nighttime beach patrols: Volunteers and local guides patrol the beaches to look for turtle tracks and secure nests immediately.
  • Hatchery management: Eggs are carefully incubated in a protected area, safe from heat, flooding and predators.
  • Hatchling releases: Guiding newborn turtles to the surf under safe conditions.
  • Volunteer and educational workshops: Organizing hands-on educational workshops, including special sessions for participants from partners such as WeAdventures during the nesting season.
